Community Outreach

"The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members." – Coretta Scott King

Dovetailing with Barton’s commitment to Better Law is our commitment to bettering our community. Barton supports various charitable and non-profit organizations in many ways, including through financial backing, leadership, volunteering efforts, and pro bono representation.

Barton makes financial contributions to non-profit organizations and causes that are meaningful both firmwide as well as to individual members of our team. Many of our attorneys also sit on the advisory boards of different non-profit organizations, offering their professional leadership experience to help these organizations grow and achieve the goals set forth in their mission statements. Barton personnel are also involved in a variety of volunteering activities, such as mentoring student interns, fundraising for cancer research, and educating voters on their rights.

Barton’s Pro Bono program provides legal representation to individuals in need. As part of our partnership with the New York County Lawyer’s Association (NYCLA), we participate in the Social Security SDNY Project which provides indigent individuals with legal aid for appealing their denial of disability benefits. Other pro bono work has included representation for refugees seeking asylum in the United States and representation for family law clients who have been the victims of gender-based violence. One of our attorneys also offers his pro bono services as the City Municipal Judge for the towns of Westcliffe and Silver Cliff, Colorado.

BUILD

Barton is an active supporter of the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF), a New York-based national organization that protects and promotes the civil rights of Asian Americans through litigation, advocacy, education, and organizing. The organization focuses on critical issues affecting Asian Americans, including immigrant rights, voting rights and democracy, economic justice for workers, and the elimination of anti-Asian violence.

The statistics are staggering – 795 million people – or one in nine people in the world – do not have enough to eat.

Annually, Barton joins the 175 firms of Primerus in a collective food drive to combat local and global hunger with “Primerus Fights World Hunger.” Locally, we collect non-perishable foods and donate to City Harvest. Globally, Barton participates in “Billable Hours for Hunger.” The contribution, equivalent to the billable hours of our participants, is given to the UN’s World Food Programme.

Barton is proud to support Best Buddies whose world-wide mission is creating opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, and inclusive living for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
