The annual Primerus Midwest Regional Meeting was held June 20-21 and hosted Primerus members in Nashville, Tennessee, for two days of networking and learning. Two Barton attorneys offered their insights on two hot-button topics for law firms: cybersecurity and non-lawyer ownership.

Partner Tara Aaron-Stelluto was part of a presentation titled, “Cybersecurity and Document Management” along with Akshay Dhawan of Ankura. Tara’s portion of the presentation examined the prevalence of data breaches at law firms in recent years, lawyers’ confidentiality obligations, and employee training to help avoid data breaches via phishing scams.

Partner Marc Dedman was part of a presentation titled, “Non-lawyer Ownership of Law Firms and Resulting Marketing/Ethical Concerns” along with Jason Murrie of Cornelius & Collins, LLP and Kevin Eddins of Eddins Domine Law Group, PLLC. Marc looked at the current American Bar Association’s rules governing non-lawyer ownership of law firms, discussed the current state of play of some potential exceptions to these rules, and considered the potential resulting ethical consequences.
