Julia G. Maxfield is a litigation partner in the New York office of Barton LLP, with a practice that focuses exclusively on matrimonial and family law. For nearly two decades, Julia has provided legal services in relation to divorce, divorce planning, property division, child custody and visitation, child support, spousal support, separation agreements, prenuptial agreements, postnuptial agreements, modification actions, enforcement actions, and family offense proceedings.

Julia is a fierce advocate for her clients in divorce and child custody matters in Supreme and Family Courts in New York, as well as in the New York Appellate Courts. She regularly represents clients at all stages of litigation through trial and the appellate process. She is also known for her ability to favorably resolve complex cases outside of court, using creative and effective settlement strategies that maximize her clients’ results. Julia is a certified divorce mediator and she often provides mediation consultation services to clients. Her comfort and experience inside and outside of the courtroom allows her to tailor her approach in each case to her individual client’s needs and preferences.

Julia has a well-earned reputation for her practical and methodical approach to each case, her tactical thinking, her sensitivity to the needs of parents and children in custody matters, and her strong acumen for the financial aspects of divorce, particularly in relation to complex and high-net-worth matters. Julia holds a Master’s Degree in Wealth Management from Columbia University, with coursework completed in the areas of financial planning, investments, tax, estate planning, insurance, retirement planning, and financial psychology. This elevated level of study enables her to provide holistic service to her clients as they navigate the financial considerations of divorce. She regularly works alongside wealth managers, accountants, valuators, and trusts and estates attorneys to ensure that her clients’ assets are protected and that all strategies are designed to maximize future financial circumstances for them and for their children.
